A properly cared-for canvas tent will last 20+ years. Most of what damages canvas tents is avoidable. This guide covers everything you need to know.
The single most important rule
Never store a canvas tent when it is wet or damp. A tent stored while damp will develop mildew. Once mildew appears, it can be treated but the stain is permanent. This single rule prevents the majority of canvas tent failures.
New tent — first use
Set it up and soak it. The seams of a new canvas tent may weep slightly the first time they get wet. This is normal. The needle holes will close as the thread swells. To speed this up, set up your new tent, soak the seams with a garden hose several times, and allow it to dry completely between soakings. After 2–3 soak-and-dry cycles, the seams will be tight.
Do not apply waterproofing treatments. Canvas breathes. A waterproofing coating seals the fabric, prevents breathability, and causes condensation — especially when using a wood stove. The cotton duck will become more water-resistant with each wetting cycle on its own.
Daily care while in camp
- ✓ Shake out debris and dirt daily
- ✓ Keep the tent well-ventilated
- ✓ Wipe up spills immediately
- ✓ Keep the door open when possible in warm weather
- ✗ Never cook inside the tent
- ✗ Never touch the interior canvas when it is wet
- ✗ Keep sharp objects away from canvas walls
- ✗ Do not allow water to pool on the roof
Cleaning your canvas tent
For light cleaning
Use cold water and a soft-bristle brush. Gently scrub affected areas. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow to air-dry completely before storage.
For heavy soiling
Use a mild soap specifically formulated for canvas. Never use detergents, bleach, or harsh chemicals — they damage the water-resistant treatment and weaken canvas fibers. Apply with a soft brush, rinse multiple times to remove all soap residue, and dry completely in the sun.
Never machine wash or machine dry canvas.
Dealing with mildew
Prevention is far easier than treatment. Always store the tent dry. If packing wet, set it up and dry it within 48 hours.
Treatment: Brush off surface mildew outdoors. Use a canvas-safe mildew remover. Scrub gently with a soft brush and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry in direct sunlight. The stain may remain after treatment — this is normal and does not affect the canvas’s performance or integrity.
